Nausea, Constipation and Other GLP-1 Side Effects: What Dallas Patients Can Do

Medically reviewed by Dr. Diala Alatassi, MD

Digestive side effects are common when starting a GLP-1. Here is what may help, what to avoid, and when to reach out to your provider.

Most people who take a GLP-1 medication notice some digestive side effects, particularly when starting or moving up a dose. For many, these settle with time, and everyday habits may help.

Common side effects

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Abdominal discomfort, bloating, gas, and burping
  • Reflux or heartburn
  • Fatigue

What may help

  • Eat smaller meals and stop at the first sign of fullness.
  • Choose lighter foods and limit greasy, fried, or very sweet items.
  • Stay hydrated, especially in Texas heat, since vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration.
  • Add fiber gradually and stay active to support digestion.
  • Do not lie down right after eating.

Serious side effects to know about

Seek prompt care for severe or persistent stomach pain (possibly with vomiting), signs of gallbladder problems, dehydration, severe allergic reactions, or vision changes. The Wegovy and Zepbound labels list warnings and precautions in full.

Do not adjust your dose on your own

Dose changes are guided by the labeling and how you are tolerating treatment. Tell your provider what you are experiencing so the plan can be adjusted.
